Senior Program Manager
Additional information about Lukasz Aleksandrowicz
Lukasz Aleksandrowicz joined the Weston Family Foundation in November of 2021. He is responsible for managing the Foundation's Homegrown Innovation Challenge.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Lukasz was a senior research manager at the Wellcome Trust, where he developed strategy and funding programs at the intersection of climate, environmental change, and health, including in food systems. He also worked on the Indian Million Death Study, leading development of new tools for tracking mortality in low-resource settings.
Lukasz has a PhD in Population Health and a MSc in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (UK). He has a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Guelph.
Director of Granting
Additional information about Selga Apse
Selga Apse (she/her) joined the Weston Family Foundation in May 2022, providing parental leave coverage for Crystal Braganza.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Selga worked with the Canadian Olympic Foundation where she spent almost a decade building its fundraising programs, managing operations, launching it’s endowment fund and supporting 52 National Sport Organizations with grants and programs. She also supported Team Canada athletes and coaches directly serving at four Olympic Games in Brazil, South Korea, Japan, and China.
Selga began her career at The National Ballet of Canada working in all areas of fundraising, and following that at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Senior Director of Communications
Additional information about Laura Arlabosse-Stewart
Laura Arlabosse-Stewart (she/her) joined the Weston Family Foundation as Director of Communications in July 2022.
Before joining the Foundation, she worked at Habitat for Humanity as Director of Communications, implementing integrated strategic external and internal communication initiatives. She also provided senior communications support and advice for the executive leadership team, including key messages, media training, speaking notes, presentations, and town halls.
Laura has experience building strong relationships and supporting complex federations with streamlined storytelling, branding, issue management, and crisis communication. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Political Science from Concordia University.
Director of Operations
Additional information about Crystal Braganza
Crystal joined the Weston Family Foundation in 2014 and since then has held various roles as a member of the Operations team. Most recently, prior to joining the Foundation, Crystal worked in operations at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, where she worked to create efficiencies for the Operating Room.
She is responsible for ensuring excellence and innovation in granting processes, and executing many of the Foundation’s support functions.
Crystal holds an Honours Bachelor of Science, and Certificates of Business and Project Management from the University of Toronto.
Program Manager, Northern
Additional information about David Bysouth
David Bysouth (he/him) joined the Weston Family Foundation in December 2023. He is responsible for managing the programming related to Northern Science and Knowledge.
Prior to joining the foundation, David worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Guelph, where, as a soil and ecosystem science researcher, he collaborated with communities in the Northwest Territories to understand the environmental impact of converting boreal forest to agriculture as a means of improving food security. He has also spent time understanding historical environmental conditions of peatlands in the Hudson Bay Lowlands region of Northern Ontario.
David has a PhD in Integrative Biology from the University of Guelph, a MSc in Earth Science from the University of Toronto, and a BSc in Life Sciences from McMaster University.
Grants Specialist, Landscapes
Additional information about Sarah Cook
Sarah Cook joined the Weston Family Foundation in January 2022 as a Grants Coordinator. She is responsible for supporting the operational needs of programs related to the Weston Family Microbiome Initiative and Northern Science and Knowledge.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Sarah worked on the Operations and Finance teams for a number of Canadian and international non-profit organizations including the Stephen Lewis Foundation and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation.
Sarah holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Development Studies and a Postgraduate Certificate in International Development Management.
Head of Strategic Initiatives and Projects
Additional information about Jeff Coull
Jeff Coull commenced work with the Weston Family Foundation as a contract Executive Director of the Weston Brain Institute in 2019, before taking on the responsibilities of Head of Strategic Initiatives and Programs in 2021. In his current role he contributes to undertakings of the Foundation that fall outside of the normal scope of its philanthropic activities.
Prior to working with the Foundation, Jeff started and ran several small biotechnology companies seeking to discover novel treatments for pain, inflammatory bowel disease and other indications. In addition to serving the Foundation, he advises various entities in the life sciences space.
Jeff holds a PhD in pharmacology from McGill University, where he studied spinal mechanisms contributing to chronic pain, and was awarded a BSc (Hons) from Queen’s University.

Additional information about Adina Krupnik
Adina Krupnik (she/her) joined the Weston Family Foundation as Coordinator in September 2024. She is a member of the Operations team and is responsible for supporting the administrative needs related to Discretionary giving.
Adina holds an Honours Bachelors of Arts degree in Anthropology and Women and Gender Studies from the University of Toronto.
Senior Program Director, Conservation
Additional information about Meghan MacDougall
Meghan MacDougall joined the Weston Family Foundation in 2016 as Program Director of Northern Science and Knowledge, before moving to her current role in 2019. She is responsible for the oversight of all programming related to Environmental Stewardship.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Meghan spent over a decade working with a variety of state and federal agencies in the US, managing conservation programs for critical wildlife habitat and farmland, and led strategic investments to help preserve and enhance open space for the State of Colorado.
Meghan received her Bachelor of Science degree at Michigan State University.
Senior Manager, Grants and Operations
Additional information about Gabriella Mante
Gabriella Mante (she/her) joined the Weston Family Foundation in July of 2019. She is a member of the Operations team and is responsible for ensuring the administrative and grant management needs of the Foundation are being met.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Gabriella was a Programme Officer at the Stephen Lewis Foundation, where she managed a portfolio of grants distributed to community-based organizations in sub-Saharan Africa.
Gabriella holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Peace, Conflict, & Justice Studies and Political Science from the University of Toronto.
Senior Manager, Operations
Additional information about Megan McCafferty
Megan McCafferty (she/her) joined the Weston Family Foundation in September of 2019. She is a member of the Operations team and oversees the Foundation's team of Grants Coordinators, while supporting the grants process for several programs, including assistance with budgeting and financial reporting.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Megan worked as an Administrative Assistant at KPMG LLP and as a Programme Administrative Officer with The Stephen Lewis Foundation.
Megan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Development Studies from the University of Waterloo and a Diploma in General Social Work Studies from Renison University College.
Payments Specialist
Additional information about Carolyn McEwen
Carolyn McEwen (she/her) joined the Weston Family Foundation as Coordinator in August 2013. She is a member of the Operations team and is responsible for supporting the administrative needs of both the Foundation Team and the Board of Directors.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Carolyn joined Weston Foods in 1988 as Coordinator, and moved to a similar role at George Weston Limited, where she was responsible for supporting the management team and other administrative tasks.
Executive Director
Additional information about Lara O'Donnell
Lara O’Donnell (she/her) was appointed Executive Director of the Weston Family Foundation in 2020 and is responsible for all aspects of the strategy and program delivery, reporting to the Board of Directors.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Lara was the Director of Research Partnerships at the Canadian technology scale-up Element AI, where she was responsible for the design and execution of the research partnership strategy. Previous to that, Lara has held leadership roles within the Canadian research and innovation ecosystem. She was a Senior Director of Research at CIFAR (formerly the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) an organization dedicated to creating transformative knowledge by convening interdisciplinary teams of scholars, and Director of the Accelerate and Elevate programs at Mitacs, building bridges between academia and industry.
Lara studied the mechanisms involved in sensing and repairing DNA during her postdoctoral research at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital. She also investigated the processes of cell division during her Ph.D. which she completed at McGill University. She earned her BSc. in Biology from McMaster University.
Senior Program Manager
Additional information about Rene Prashad
Rene Prashad joined the Weston Family Foundation as Research Programs Specialist at the Weston Brain Institute in 2014, before transitioning to his current role as Senior Program Manager in 2021. He is responsible for the Foundation’s neuroscience scaling initiatives, including the Weston Family Focused Ultrasound Initiative at Sunnybrook.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Rene worked in various industries such as life science, finance and retail.
Rene has an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience, a Master of Science in Neurophysiology, and a PhD in Neurophysiology from the University of Toronto.
Program Director, Northern
Additional information about Alison Ronson
Alison (she/her) joined the Weston Family Foundation in 2022 and oversees all programming related to Northern Science and Knowledge. Prior to joining the Foundation, Alison worked as the National Director of Operations and Legal Counsel with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), where she was responsible for instituting operational systems and processes in the CPAWS national office. Alison has an extensive work history in large landscape-scale science and conservation, fundraising, financial planning, and reporting within charitable/non-profit organizations.
Alison has a degree of Barrister-at-Law, Law Society of Ontario, a Masters in International Affairs from Carleton University, where she focused on the impact of climate change on Arctic environmental institutions, and a Bachelor of Science with Honours from Queens University (Faculty of Biology and Faculty of Environmental Sciences), where she studied the impact of climate change on Arctic soil microbial processes.
Senior Program Manager
Additional information about Teenu Sanjeevan
Teenu Sanjeevan joined the Weston Family Foundation as Research Program Specialist in 2020, before transitioning to her current role in 2021. She is responsible for managing the Foundation’s neuroscience programs.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Teenu was a Research Associate, and previously a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, at the Autism Research Centre of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.
Teenu has a Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences and a Master of Science in Cognitive Science of Language from McMaster University, and a PhD in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Toronto.
Communications Specialist
Additional information about Alana Simpson
Meet Alana Simpson (she/her), a seasoned communications professional with 10 years of experience. She has spent her career in agencies and start-ups, as well as freelancing. Her skills include managing media relations, influencer marketing, social media marketing, as well as developing holistic marketing and communications strategies from the ground up, and more.
Due to the range of clients that she has worked with, Alana is skilled in translating niche language into accessible content in both English and French. She also has boundless ideas, tireless enthusiasm, and an unshakeable drive to help the people and places she works for reach their goals and stand out in whatever industry they inhabit.
She has a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Political Science from University of Ottawa and has a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations and Corporate Communications from Centennial College.
Senior Advisor, Microbiome
Additional information about Geordie Stewart
Geordie Stewart joined the Weston Family Foundation in 2016. He is responsible for the oversight of all programming related to the Microbiome Committee.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Geordie founded and lead several innovative technology firms and served as an advisor to many Canadian entrepreneurs and investors in the health and technology spheres. Previous to this, he worked as a PhD researcher with the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research at McMaster University, where he focused on the exploration of complex aspects of bacterial biology and the development of new therapeutic strategies to combat antibiotic resistance. In addition to serving at the Foundation, Geordie advises various entities in the life science space with a particular focus on growing a vibrant Canadian biotechnology sector.
Geordie has a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree in Biochemistry, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and an MBA from McMaster University.
Program Director, Neuroscience
Additional information about Cristina Tang
Cristina Tang (she/her) joined the Weston Family Foundation as a Research Programs Specialist in 2015, before transitioning to her current role in 2021. She is responsible for the administration of the Weston Brain Institute programs.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Cristina was Program Lead of Industry Relations at the Ontario Brain Institute, and before that, she worked for two years at various biotech and pharma companies.
Cristina has a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Simon Fraser University, and a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Toronto.
Executive Assistant and Team Coordinator

Anna Themelis (she/her) joined the Foundation in her role as Executive Assistant and Team Coordinator in February 2022. She is a member of the Operations team and is responsible for supporting the administrative needs of the Foundation’s Executive Director, as well as providing wider support to the Foundation as a whole.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Anna worked as the Executive Assistant to the President & CEO and Board of Directors at the Mackenzie Health Foundation. She has over 20 years of experience as an Executive Assistant in the healthcare and not-for-profit sectors, and is trained and educated in many areas of administration including Business Administrative Practices, Corporate Governance, Business Communications, Project Management, and Health & Safety.

Additional information about Marina Thornbury
Marina Thornbury (she/her) joined the Weston Family Foundation in April 2022. As a Grants Coordinator, she is a member of the Operations team and primarily supports the Foundation’s Neuroscience Committee.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Marina worked as an Operations and Volunteer Engagement Assistant with the Society for Neuroscience (SfN), an international membership organization in Washington, DC. Marina holds a Bachelor of Science from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, where she studied Neuroscience and Public Health.
Program Director
Additional information about Marcel van de Wouw, PhD
Marcel van de Wouw (he/him) joined the Weston Family Foundation in 2024. He is responsible for the oversight of all programming related to the Microbiome Committee.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Marcel researched the link between the gut microbiome with child development and perinatal mental health as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Calgary. Previous to this, he worked as a PhD researcher investigating how microbiome-targeted interventions impact the brain and behaviour using preclinical approaches at University College Cork (Ireland).
Marcel has a BSc in Biology and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience.
